» Pedro Nunes Lectures
Pedro Nunes Lectures is an initiative of Centro Internacional de Matemática (CIM) in cooperation with Sociedade Portuguesa de Matemática (SPM), with the support of the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, to promote visits of notable mathematicians to Portugal. Each visitor is invited to give two or three lectures in Portuguese Universities on the recent developments in mathematics, their applications and cultural impact.
Pedro Nunes Lectures are aimed to a vast audience, with wide mathematical interests, especially PhD students and youth researchers.
Mathematics and Engineering in Marine and Earth Problems
October 9, 2013 – October 12, 2013 — Univ. of AveiroThe International Conference "Mathematics and Engineering in Marine and Earth Problems" (MEME'2013) will take place at the University of Aveiro, Portugal, on October 9-12, 2013.
The main goal of MEME'2013 is to provide a multidisciplinary forum where mathematicians and engineers can engage and discuss the development of innovative scientific and technological tools for the study and exploration of the Earth and the Ocean. Besides promoting demonstrations and discussions of recent advances in hot topics of research, the conference is expected to foster a tighter cooperation between theoretical and experimental practitioners leading to the emergence of new research agendas and providing guidelines for future work.
MEME'2013 is planned as part of the celebration of 2013 International Year of the Mathematics of Planet Earth (http://mpe2013.org).
The conference program will include Plenary Talks (45 min), Talks at Invited Sessions (25 min) and Contributed Talks (20 min). The speakers of Invited Sessions will be appointed by the organizers of Invited Sessions, who have developed a renowned work in fields of Mathematics and Engineering related with Marine and Earth Sciences.
The topics foreseen include, but are not limited to:
- Modelling of geological processes and geo-hazards with potentially high societal impacts;
- Optimization of integrated Earth-Ocean sensor networks;
- Modelling of ocean processes with application to underwater wireless communications;
- Control problems in wave-energy stations and offshore wind-farming;
- Geophysical inversion methods applied to the exploitation of sea-floor resources;
- Geomagnetic and gravimetric based navigation of underwater robotic vehicles.
These topics are related with the following areas of mathematics, besides others:
- Numerical analysis;
- Ordinary and partial differential equations;
- Integral operators and Fourier analysis;
- Statistics and stochastic process;
- Optimization and control theory.
Both theoretical and applied issues, related with Marine and Earth problems, are relevant to the conference.
